Dianna Smith was honored at the 2011 Coweta Chamber of Commerce Awards and Installation Banquet held Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel in Catoosa.
Smith, who received a number of nominations, began a Bridge Builders program for people with mental and physical handicaps. The organization meets once a month and provides food and entertainment for the teens and adults so that their parents and caregivers can have some time to themselves.
She organizes a summer camp for Bridge Builders and their families and is in the process of beginning “KCW”, a training vocational program for handicapped individuals throughout Wagoner County to receive job training.
“Dianna has worked with Special Olympics for years, taking kids to the games,” award presenter Irene Dressel said. “She established a horseback riding club for them, a bowling club and organized a work program for them at the Coweta Assembly of God coffee shop.”
Dressel cited a number of instances where Smith and her family have stepped in to help others when help was least expected.
“When you have people like Dianna Smith living in your community you are proud to call Coweta your home,” Dressel said.
Smith, wiping tears from her eyes, humbly accepted the award saying it is a privilege to work with the special individuals and volunteers who make up the Bridge Builders organization.
