The Sutton’s were in attendance for the dedication ceremony led by Cameron Walker, Executive Director of Tulsa Habitat for Humanity. Barbara Markwardt and Opal Voss, representatives of Tulsa Council of Federated Garden Clubs awarded the family with a Red Bud tree for their front yard plus their choice of butterfly, vegetable and herb gardens to be planted in the spring. Todd Klabenes, Director of Family Services Habitat for Hamanity presented the Suttons with a gift basket of cleaning products donated by Proctor and Gamble, plus mentioned that all of the appliances installed in the home were donated by Whirlpool and that the refrigerator will be stocked by the Eastern Ok Food Bank. Joyce Weaver, McGraw Realtors and coordinator for McGraw Women Build left the family with a gift certificate for each of the Suttons to attend the Warren Theater, voucher for snacks plus a cash donation.
The Reverend J.B. Patterson, Jr., Timothy Baptist Church, gave the dedication and blessing of the house, before Sutton unlocked the door and he and his children entered the finished home for the first time. Inside, they were greeted with a decorated Christmas tree, wrapped gifts under the tree, stuffed stockings for each member of the family and baked goods in the kitchen, supplied by McGraw Realtors.
A single father of six children, Marques Sutton, once homeless and living in the backseat of his car, vowed to provide a place to raise his children. Through unwavering determination and hard work he obtained his license as Master Barber, Instructor, working at Xpozure II Barbershop as well as instructing Barbering at Tulsa Tech. His application for a home was accepted with Habitat for Humanity and he and his four daughters and two sons put in many long hours working alongside the volunteers on their future home. When asked what their favorite contribution to the job was, the two older daughters agreed it was painting the home. Their oldest brother liked painting the storage building the best.
Joyce Weaver stated that several of the realtors mentioned how much it filled their hearts with joy to participate in this blessed event, giving the Sutton family a Christmas they will always remember.
Mr. Sutton gave an emotional speech thanking everyone who participated in making this house a home for his family. He shared these words before opening the door to his home for the first time, “If you are ever down and out, always keep your faith – it will take you as far in life as you want to go.” He closed by sharing this bit of insight, “Always be strong because you never know whom you might inspire.”
McGraw Realtors will continue to work with Habitat for Humanity and are looking forward to next Christmas so they can do it all over again!
